The Wall Street Journal is reporting that positive drug tests results have hit an 16-year high.
With 15 states now allowing adult-use (recreational) marijuana use and with 34 states with some form of medical marijuana legalization or decriminalization, it is not surprising that we’re seeing increases in the number of positive drug tests.

Drug testing lab Quest Diagnostics sampled nine million tests last year for employers and found that marijuana urine tests showed an 11% increase in positive samples over 2018.
The good news is that the number of requests for marijuana tests has declined 3% over the last 5 years, meaning that labs like Quest Diagnostics are getting fewer requests to test job applicants for THC.
This is obviously a result of more states prohibiting employers from discriminating against job applicants that test positive for marijuana where medical or adult-use marijuana is legal.
However, employers are still testing for other narcotics but the news is also good there too. Positive rates for opiates fell 19% in 2019 and have fallen 49% since 2015.
